Why time management? and in particular why time management classes?
We are all short on time these days and we would all love to have more hours in the day. True? Well guess what? Universal physics will not allow that. The universe will not change for us, no matter how much we would love it to. When we say we are running out of time in the day, what we are really saying is that we are not using the time we have correctly.
Correct use of time is imperative in today’s society. Not only do we have our work to do but we have families, friends and leisure to fit into our busy daily schedules. Now, we have all been there, we have the best intentions to make the most of our day. Get our work done, play with the kids, meet up with friends and loved ones and then head off to the television later on in the night, to relax with the other half. What actually occurs is that we whittle away the hours on facebook, play a few games of online scrabble, panic and rush some work out, head off to lunch and have a few beers, then head back to the office try and catchup, we can’t, so we end up either staying back late or working at home. this is ok to do once in a while but if it happens daily or even weekly then you are probably in a downward spiral.
What you are probably lacking is structure in your life. Once again we have all been there, so don’t feel bad about it. if you are finding yourself in this position and are not able to get yourself out. Then what you probably need are Time Management Classes. A good time management course can really give you that wake up call. it can get things on the right track again.
The 5 main things a Time Management Class can offer you
1. Structure. As I said above lacking structure in your life is easy. Bringing structure back to a structure-less life can be very hard! You can read a book about Time Managment and get information but what a book doesn’t do is force you to get up out of your current comfort zone and move to somewhere that isn’t quite as comfortable. If you do this, half the battle is won. Classes force you to set aside some time for them, it is usually a regular time also. SO you start to form a bit of habit and break old ones.
2. Engagement. A time management course will force you to engage others. Both your teacher and other like minded individuals, who are interested in changing their lives for the better. This sense of community is invaluable. As it will allow you to set up an un-official buddy system. People you might be able to rely on should you find the going tough. By the same token you might be able to help others achieve their goals and this can be just as powerful motivator as wanting yourself to achieve.
3. Representation and Presentation.. Reading a time management book and looking at the diagrams that grace it’s pages. Is far removed from understanding those very same diagrams. Sometimes a simple slide explained by a facilitator can convey more meaning than a whole book and all it’s pretty pictures. Often presenters will recite life experiences and anecdotes to help explain a diagram or some knowledge they had previously imparted. This can often allow for a greater, more in depth understanding of the subject matter and provides reference points for the human brain to memorize the information. This kind of learning is gold. A good presenter can, in one session, make you change the habits of a lifetime.
4. Dedication. Dedication is a lot easier when you have spent your hard earned cash on a course. They are usually more expensive than a book, so you should have extra motivation and commitment to stay at it and learn from it. A relatively cheap book does not engender the same kind of commitment, it is easy to justify putting down a thirty dollar book and never picking up again. If you have sheeled out two hundred dollars plus on a course then you will probably be more interested in implementing what you have learnt.
5. Assessment . Not all course and classes offer these but I recommend going with the ones that do. The reason being is that it makes you answerable and accountable. Accountability is a big thing in time management. You need to be accountable to someone, “generally yourself”. However it is also good to be accountable to others and assessment teaches you that and gives you a feel for being responsible to others. Most people respond to being kept in check and will usually build habits around the procedures they are shown if at first they are forced to do those procedures. Assessment is great not only for letting you know what you have learnt but also for highlighting what you haven’t.
There has to be a distinction drawn between courses and classes. The distinction I draw is, Classes are almost always face to face. Yet courses can be done remotely. A good class will be live, will generally require you to travel, at least to the other side of town. Being forced to get out and about, breaking your routine is a good start to getting your time management into order.
